The legendary art duo Gilbert & George have collaborated for over 50 years. The pair, consisting of Gilbert Prousch and George Passmore, met in 1967 while both studying sculpture at Saint Martin’s School of Art. Insatiately they initiated a working and romantic relationship. Since 1968 they have lived together in London’s East End, which has since served as a home and inspiration for all of their art as they regard it as a microcosm for modern life.

Gilbert and George have always claimed an anti-elitist aesthetics and politics, with the ambition to appeal beyond the confines of the small art world. They work in a variety of media but refer to their own work as sculptures. They are best known for their series of large scale photo works, simply titled Pictures. The early Pictures was made in black in white with panted yellow and red elements. Today, they have moved on to a bolder range of colors, sometimes backlighting the works and superimposing black grids. These works have adressed many different subject matters such as religion, patriotism and politics. In their own words the Pictures are ”a visual love letter from us to the viewer”.

Gilbert and George have become both cult-figures and acclaimed international artistis. They continue to live and work together in London’s East End.
